Second full week...

This morning began the second week of CFA flood central. That's hard to believe...

Rather than going in to the office at my normal arrival, I went to the "Disaster Central Command" office. This is our combined staff room with three desks, filing cabinets out of the main office, temporary phone and fax lines, copier and paper cabinet. It is the only room in the whole church with any air conditioning...at least this little window unit provides a little relief from the 95 degree temps in the rest of the main floor.

Started with time in the Word, seeking God for the day and thanksgiving for a good first service at our satellite site. Sounds kinda neat doesn't it? We've got a site off campus...at least we had a place to worship together. Thanks Lord for your provision and direction!

It was quiet for about an hour before the place starting buzzing again with activity: workers working on cleaning the building, workers clearing out mud and debris from the basement (first time attention was given to this war disaster zone), workers disassembling the stage/platform in the youth chapel, steam cleaning the toddler area and one lone worker cleaning underneath the back hallway behind the baptismal tank. This guy wiggled like a snake to finish his assignment of disinfecting the water damage that was clear back to the far wall. Thorough and complete! It's what had to be done to rid this closed-in area of water and moisture.

Then my bookkeeper came into the command central office to find the phones ringing off the hook. People coming in for desperately needed supplies - just about anything to help them get relief and help. Men from the Love Chapel came in to pick up some water, power aide, and other supplies that were left over from the COH outreach. I heard they were low on supplies to assist the many that looked there for help. Seems like everything isn't going to go back to "normal" any time soon. Might as well get used to this paradigm shift that has erupted since the flood. Lord help us prepare to meet the needs of the suffering and displaced. These needs are overwhelming!

People from the church came in and out as well. My wife showed up for service on basement rescue missions with Ted; however, not as successful as in future ones. Pastor Joel joined us back on the "command central" team. I sent him on a hospital visit to Seymour. Plus, we had several other prayer requests and others going into the hosptital as well. David Holman was away on vacation when the flood hit and toured the facility...was blown away when he saw it today. It was great having Randle here to serve as our receiving manager for all inquiries and requests. Great job Rand...you the man! Quite a busy Monday at command central...but a very productive day.

Had a meeting with a couple about future ministry endeavors. Excited about what my God is doing to bring about the vision for "transforming lives through the power of Jesus Christ!" And we do that through synergy and networking. Greatest thing about this move of God...Holy Spirit is in charge of all connections, decisions, personnel, provision, empowerment and resources. Lord, it is amazing to look over your shoulder onto the master plan you have for our regional church ministry center! You sure do know how to pull all the pieces together for disaster outreach ministry, home rebuilding, church restoration, church design and ministry expansion. This is totally awesome!

Had an afternoon appointment to get my eyes examined. Looks like I'll need new prescription lens, and some new frames to go with it. Then I gathered the Church Leadership together to bring them up to date on our progress. Guess where we met? PIZZA HUT. Both my boys were working tonight, plus Nathan, Ethan and Bethany too. CFA is providing an excellent work force for this restaurant. Also, Trenton cooked some pretty mean pizza's tonight! Way to go T.

My brother Dave drove in from Illinois to assess the damage and provide some excellent counsel on building ideas, design and knowledge of time lines. You see, he built a gorgeous church in Lincoln, Illinois with very little help. If you are ever that way, check it out. One thing my brother does well - building and construction, as well as design and implementation. This is not my strength. Glad to have him around for a couple of days.

Well, looks like I stayed up a little too late tonight talking and writing this blog.

Keep the prayers flowing before the throne...God continues to amaze me "beyond my wildest imagination!" Trust you are staying close to the One with the Master Plan...

Love to all. Post a little comment to let me hear from you!

Father's Day Service!

Today we all started Father's Day out on what seemed like the left foot...

First of all, I was up till the wee hours of the morning getting primed and prayed up for service. Spiritual juices were flowing to share with the congregation of what God was doing in our midst. When I finally dozed off to sleep, I got up rather early...and couldn't go back to sleep. Then the clock seemingly froze at different spots on its cycle around the numbers. I kept trying to comprehend that we weren't going to church for about 5 or 6 more hours. The feeling of not being in church @ 8:40 am was surreal. It was odd...staying at home when we should have been in church...but then I was jolted to reality that this isn't "church as usual" anymore. We have had a rebirth. CFA is going under a metamorphosis...we are being transformed into a church with no set norms. Yes, we are grounded on the rock of God's Word but now we must DO CHURCH differently if we are to function, live and grow!

The time finally arrived for Ashlyn and me to leave the house. We drove to CFA to gather some needed items, which were normally in its proper staging area in what was once our worship center meeting place. Then we headed out to our temporary church location, which was just about 4 or 5 blocks away...on the other side of the creek which overflowed its banks. Driving into their parking lot for church felt strange...and good all at the same time. Cars of parishioners were already parked. Soon, CFA vehicles would be coming. Would the switch from one church to the next be a seamless one or traffic jam? All in all - a good hand off! This was historic for our fellowship. We've never been this way before...and there was this releasing and freeing feeling. In fact,I told my wife that I just didn't sense that a suit would be in order today...so I grabbed my black pants and chose a "different" shirt, colorful, one that didn't need to be tucked in...with no shirt and tie. Not sure of what the people thought, but I wasn't going to be bound by tradition and legalism now...church has changed, we morphed into God's butterfly of change! Thanks Lord for the spirit of life...not so sure how this is all going to pan out, but I'm feeling really good about the service today!

Also, the members of this fellowship had just received word that their pastor was resigning to accept God's call to a new city, new state and a new opportunity. Add to the mix that a Pentecostal church was coming to worship in their sanctuary and not understanding how long this arrangement would be extended...we all were off to a "different" kind of Father's Day...for them and for us! Thanks Lord for breaking down the walls that separate us and bringing each fellowship into a deeper understanding of learning that we are all ONE in Christ Jesus! Did I hear you say an "amen"?

I met with Roger and the worship team for prayer instead of the pastor's prayer partners group. Just another item that was needed for this special and holy day. Holy Spirit showed up...knew we were in for something spectacular. The people kept coming in the doors and filling up the two section sanctuary...which was quite smaller than what we had been used to for so long. Back home we were spread out and separated...here we were close, side by side and loving it....even if it did get a little warm in there. Again, a good change of pace. It required that people look for the pew they wanted to worship in (kinda of humorous to see which group of CFA'ers picked the left and right sections of pews). Lord, we desperately needed to be uprooted from habitual ruts that we've found ourselves in for so long...same time, same order of service, same pew, same motions and same responses! Lord continue to shake us up for your glory and honor! WE BELONG TO YOU!

The service had its quirks...no I didn't say jerks...I mean, we had our difficulties with the sound system, space factor, split second power outage and one stop family worship setting...which means all ages worshipped together. Once again, not a bad thing...just all in sync with this "different" Father's Day. Worship was fantastic...in spite of the little problems...wow Lord...you don't have to have a perfect sound system setting, perfect balance between instruments, and perfect sound of singers for God to move. All you need are desperate, hungry and thirsty people!

There was dynamic fellowship, deliberate worship, powerful prayer huddles, passionate hugs, big smiles, seed gifts to those who lost much in the flood, urgent appeal for faithful Christian stewardship, an ignited messenger with a message that wasn't typed, wasn't normal but connected with God's people who listened intently to each word that I preached! God, you gave us your love and you gave us your Son. WE LOVE YOU FATHER GOD! Happy Father's Day. You are so good to us!

The service lasted longer than what I envisioned it to be...but then again, it didn't seem that our people were bothered by this. They were having CHURCH. They were gathered together as a fellowship. They were able to bring their tithes & offerings to present to the Lord in worship (by the way, another God-sized miracle in that the offering taken totaled some $21,500!! This isn't a normal offering...this is a Jehovah-Jireh miracle offering!).

We then held hands and prayed together. We were dismissed with jubilant songs of worship. Each left with the sense of God's immediate presence, plus the cemented koinonia between family members...we knew that we had touched heaven today...perhaps it was heaven touching the people that assembled at a Baptist church on 7th Street in the flooded town of Columbus, Indiana. Either way, we were good to go. We were good to face the challenges of the week. We knew God was with us...we knew He cared. That's all that really matters.

I closed with the words, "As for me and my church, we will serve the Lord. Lord, we will keep our eyes on you!"

Lord, what miracles do you have in store for us in week two of rebuilding, restoring, and rechanging the way that we do CHURCH in Columbus? I'm ready to learn...ready to go!

I'm loving this NEW CHURCH of COLUMBUS FIRST ASSEMBLY OF GOD!

If you are anywhere near to our great city, please come and see for yourself what God is doing here...it literally is beyond our wildest dreams and visions!

My love to you and yours.

Ministry outreach continues to flow...

Today I took a break from the constant strain of our ministry center recovery and rebuilding project. I had a diversion that was rejuvenating and refreshing. I worked at Victory Field in Indy at the concession stands helping to raise money for my son's band expenses. Met a lot of wonderful people in the Band Boosters Club for Columbus East High School.

However, I did return to the church on my way home and spent several hours conversing with the project manager and walking through our exposed and somewhat naked church building. By naked I mean that every room is easily accessible and exposed to the next by the 4-foot floor opening. I can reach the sanctuary from my office, or the library by my office or the sanctuary bathroom to the sanctuary...get the picture. Even the main sanctuary platform floor has been yanked up. Looks pretty weird going in there...

Tammy, my lovely wife, had the opportunity for powerful ministry encounters at the COH distribution center today in our parking lot. This week she has been tied up in Indy every day for her work training and Autism seminars. She was sun-burned when I saw her today. She was talking and counseling a young child and her mother when I arrived on our outreach site. Pretty amazing this awesome wife of mine. She got right into the heart of the ministry action by touching tired and wounded lives with that bubbly joy and vivacious life that she carries from day to day. Thank you Lord for a partner, mate and friend in ministry that would work most of the day while her husband was off on a different mission the same day. "He who findeth a wife findeth a good thing!"

Tomorrow we venture forth into untraveled territory...at least not from about half a century ago. By this I mean that we leave 10th and Iowa Streets to worship in my friends church at Memorial Baptist on 7th Street. Think about it...
  • A different location...
  • A different church building...
  • A different floor plan...
  • A different sanctuary...
  • A different sound system to get used to...
  • A different time of the day (12:30 pm)...
  • A different pew for our people to pick out and choose where they want to worship (you know how we get so used to the same pew, same row and same things...
  • In summary, tomorrow will be quite different and very unusual...
However, different is just what God is doing to our church right now. Remember, we don't know what we are doing church, but our eyes are upon the Lord! He will show up...He will touch us...He will still save the lost and heal the sick...and He will perform miracles "beyond all limits."

I hope you will be praying in your church's for Columbus First Assembly. Would you say a little prayer for our congregation in your service this Lord's day? He has been responding to every faith-filled prayer that has been prayed on our behalf.

I probably will even be too excited to get any sleep tonight. Wait to hear more on this incredible service tomorrow evening...

I'm anticipating God to show up BIG TIME...

Anyone remember what happened on Father's Day 1995 in Pensacola, Florida?

Outreach Continues...

God is still moving in the midst of disaster. Many hands served in ministry from the center of our battered church parking lot again today. Overnight, another semi-truck of relief supplies arrived to serve the hurting with HOPE. Volunteers came from as far away as Danville, Illinois. Five willing workers from two different churches (First A/G and New Life Christian Center) jumped in to do their part.

As I was walking among the tattered homes of our immediate neighbors this morning, a desperate cry for help was heard by one precious couple directly across the church on Iowa Street. The Spirit quickly prompted me to gather three workers from the Convoy of Hope and direct them to the flooded basement where mud, silt and water still stood. Supplies like boots and shovels were retrieved from the company working on our church and I sent these brave souls to complete this somber "basement clean-up mission."

Later, after attending to multiple needs that demanded my attention, I saw that the "basement warriors" were back in action on the COH (Convoy of Hope) distribution line. They were muddy, worn and soiled but joyful, rejoicing and happy to serve others in the name of the Lord. As this neighbor deeply expressed his gratitude for these energetic and heaven-sent volunteers, I learned that two of the Danville crew were ministers at New Life. Lord, it amazes me at the extent of your vast ministry network connections that gathers workers from across state lines!! Beyond anything that man can promote or project...Beyond All Limits!

It is wonderful to establish relationships forged in the fire of adversity with my neighbors on all sides of the church campus. There is Brandon, Carl, Carolyn, Jeff, Denny & Bonnie, plus Tim and Cindy, and Mike with his wife and their son. In fact, it was Carolyn who exploded with good news that her son had flown home from Iraq. She was ecstatic...what awesome news to rejoice over in the pits of deep and dark despair! God, you know how to bring uplifting news to those who suffer and are hurting!

Another dimension of God's master plan unfolded today for future ministry endeavors. Let me just tell you that what the devil intended for harm and destruction (perhaps even annihilation and extermination) has boomeranged around to level a horrific blow at the devil's forehead. I mean what I witnessed today was a direct attack. He's not limping, he's face down on the mat!

Check this out...
  • Good news was received on the restoration project for the church from our adjuster working on this assignment...looks like much of the major components for reconstruction will be covered under the building side of the NFIP coverage. However, we still are looking for a miracle on His provision for the hundreds of thousands of dollars needed for contents! Lord, it won't surprise me anymore on how you will get it done...you've shown me more than enough to reveal that YOU ARE IN CHARGE...and I am only your servant looking over your shoulder!
  • Multitudes of people received HOPE from our disaster relief efforts. Both from the distribution line, as well as those who were assisted from our volunteer crews in clean-up situations.
  • Police, Sheriff's Department and others utilized our Convoy of Hope supplies to be taken to areas all around the community. In fact, I was honored to help fill the trailer for the two Sheriff's deputies who smiled as they understood the power of their valuable contributions. They were getting to deliver these goods in style! Plus we held hands and prayed for them to be strengthened for the mission at hand. One wiped tears from his eyes. You know what...haven't been able to witness that in the five plus years of ministry here...
  • Our phone service has been temporarily restored to the new "command central office" by an AT&T worker from Kentucky. Thank you Lord for this desperate need of communication in the midst of chaos and despair!
  • Had to remove the ramp that led to the toddler area...looks like God is preparing us for a new ramp that we were struggling to figure out what to do and where to put it. Again, God has it all in His master plan!
  • Members from our church are stepping into God-ordained "point man positions" that are once again directed by the One who wrote this ministry outreach master plan!
  • Some exciting plans are formulating for future ministry as a result of this natural flood disaster. Yes, good things are still squeezed out of the grapes of the devil's wrath!
  • Our regional ministry center will not only be restored and rebuilt, but will have more available ministry functionality than ever before...and with new furnaces, electrical boxes, phone systems, computers, appliances, carpets, bathrooms (that's right - a new and beautiful bathroom (s) in the basement...which we've never had before but God had it in His mind to be included in these heavenly architectural drawings), plus newly updated offices, etc. Do you get the notion that God is in control of this picture...not man? YUP - I sure do!
  • Here's a funny blessing that came in the disguise of the flood: the removed drywall revealed the exact location of where those dirty termites had been living. Looks like we gotta call Terminix!! (We thought that something was kinda going on, but we were encouraged to not worry too much about it. Now we know...listen little varmits - you can run but you can't hide from God!)
You know what, the way that God is working without all of our previous modes of ministry models, communication and publicity methods, you kind of wonder what God is intending to do in the future in light of the last 6 days. Church as usual will not be church in the near future. Really not sure of the end result...but one thing is for sure, I'm not gonna miss this ride for the world!!

My friend Paul Coroleuski (COH On-Site Director) had to leave us today. He was directed to drive up to Iowa to prepare the volunteers for upcoming outreaches to another flood-swollen city. More and more disaster events are occurring more and more frequently. Friend, if you don't know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord I want to encourage you to invite him into your heart right away - before the floodwaters of life sweep you away! He is waiting for you to call on Him!

Read the recent posting article on their COH website: http://convoyofhope.org/go/usdisaster/details/despite_flood_convoy_of_hope_helps_church_reach_out

The CFA family is gearing up for our first worship service at our new satellite location: Memorial Baptist Church! Thank you Pastor Brian Teater for allowing our congregation to worship in your facility during this wilderness experience. Lord, you know the steps that we are to take, and you prepared the path for our church family to gather just blocks from our current site! Sure beats setting up all those chairs, sound system, etc. at City Hall or FFY!

Friend, as you read this amazing (perhaps even once in a lifetime) experience for a small town pastor in Columbus, Indiana, please recognize that the God of this universe has a MASTER PLAN for your life as well.

No matter where you live, no matter where you work - God's got something BIG for you to do in His Kingdom: Handing out relief supplies, filling up the trailer, digging out the mud, praying with struggling and hurting people, cleaning the parking lot, providing security for the building, cooking up good food for the workers, moving boxes, sweeping the floors, singing on the worship team, vacuuming the carpet (or in our case, ripping out the carpet!), playing in the band, teaching a class....

There is nothing too small or nothing too big for the CHAMPIONS in God's Army! Everyone has a part.

I've signed up for the long haul - HOW ABOUT YOU?

Thank you for praying for us. God is answering your prayers. We continue to covet your intercession for our church and our city. Please don't stop now...it's way too exciting and adventuresome to turn back and go on like we used to. God's Church is EXCITING and FUN. Join in!

Love to you...

Hot Day in Convoy of Hope!

Convoy of Hope, which is based out of Springfield, Missouri, conducted their disaster relief outreach campaign here today in our parking lot. They had good support staff from several area churches and ministered to the multitudes of those suffering without a home, without a bed, without a bathroom, without a frig and without their possessions. But HOPE was given to every one that was touched by the compassion and love of these brave and courageous volunteers. There must have been close to 50 to 70 volunteers throughout the day that banded together with Paul to inspire HOPE in those that are hurting and tired. They didn't wait for the cars and trucks to come through the line...they went out to their homes all over the city...providing helpful assistance, leaving valuable supplies and praying with so many, many individuals. Yes, we made a gigantic difference in the lives of literally hundreds of people today! Thanks Lord for those who were willing to sacrifice their day out in the sweltering heat to extend their hands to the hurting! This is true Christianity in action!!

Continued progress was made on our building with some 10 to 15 hard working laborers, who sweated it out in 95+ degree temperatures in our oven of a building. More and more is getting done to expose the moisture behind drywall and underneath soggy carpets. This is such a long and painstaking experience to just get the facility rid of the water, moisture and humidity that was bottled up in our church. However, just from one day ago, when the large tunnels of moving air was installed, it has turned things around 100% from what it was. The basement hasn't even been touched yet! I can't imagine what it looks like from having it completely submerged in murky waters for some 24 to 48 hours. I've heard some reports by those who have had to inspect it and it isn't a pretty picture. Downstairs will require a total renovation and reconstruction of the rooms, walls, doors, windows, suspended ceilings, furnaces and ductwork, phone system, electrical system, wiring, tables, chairs, sound system, not to mention possibly redoing the epoxy floor surface that we recently had finished. Lord, these projects overwhelm me and weigh me down...please provide the funds to finish your building for the glory of God!

A successful rescue effort was made today by some of our valiant men who discovered the Royal Ranger Pinewood Derby track in that dark hole. You gotta love those Darnall boys...always up for the challenge. It was made out of aluminum, so all they had to do was wash it off and store it till further track action. Great job guys!!

Again, it never ceases to amaze me that God sends his messengers to strengthen my hands in this crisis leadership position. Several pastors came to give me encouragement, others came to give me a hug, others wanted to donate, and still others came to work. Lord, you are more precious to me each passing day! You lift me up when I'm down and lead me out when I'm lost!

I had the privilege of carrying out an important assignment from the General Council. In our previous calls, they mentioned that they were sending me a check to be given to one of our senior retired A/G ministers in our congregation. This precious God-fearing couple lost everything when the raging waters ripped through their area. They are staying with the Wampler's, so I swung over there to personally hand deliver this gift of blessing and encouragement. This gentle brother was struck with emotion when he realized the magnitude of this blessing. He was not forgotten. He was being lifted up in prayer by those in Springfield. He was deeply loved and supported. Thanks Lord for this wonderful fellowship of the Assemblies of God where compassion flows by those who lead us in your name!

After the Convoy of Hope outreach had closed up for the day, another desperate mother and son dropped by our battered church for needed supplies. I wrestled with telling her that she could come back tomorrow, but the Spirit was telling me to give her the things that would help her. So we rounded up plenty of empty boxes, some water, cleaning supplies and even some cookies to send her on with HOPE in the name of Jesus. I prayed with them and told them we would have more assistance in the morning. Thanks Lord for not allowing me to miss this personal mission of touching a mother and son in your name!

I was also able to track a father and son down who attends our church and lost their home just a block from our church. God gave me the sights to see him driving in town and I caught up with him to hug him and tell him that we love him and are praying for him. The biggest smile came over his face when he knew it was his pastor that had discovered him. In fact, he can't wait till Sunday to worship with his church family in the sanctuary of Memorial Baptist about three or four long blocks from our current church facility. Thanks Lord for letting me show him love and compassion in your name. I had been burdened for having knowledge of how he was doing. God, you're awesome!

I want you to go to the blog of a precious couple that the Lord sent back to their home town of Columbus, Indiana to serve with the Convoy of Hope today. In fact, they even have some current pictures of today's events and one picture inside our church building. Go to:
www.msmission.blogspot.com for their take on today's ministry experiences.

I've got to get some rest tonight. My body is slowing down from this constant adrenaline rush from each day's massive disaster relief and rebuilding efforts.

Please know that your prayers are making it possible for us to continue this rebuilding fight for Columbus First Assembly, and the multitudes of displaced families in our community.

Would love to hear from you in a "comment" you can post below! Simply click on the "comment" line and post your encouraging comments. Already many have done so and I am so privileged to have their words of blessing and prayers of strength.

Love to all in the name of Jesus Christ!

Awesome God!

(Pictures from our community...)

That's right...our God is an awesome God! God, you are more than a song, more than a cliché , you are everything to me, my family, my church and my city.

With everyone praying around the world for our church, community and situation, things are moving forward. Great progress was made today. The handiwork of God was all over this day. I started the morning with a cup of java from Circle K (praise God...the water boiling order has been lifted!). Arrived at command central in our church facilities and went to work. Kristy arrived, then Martha, then others one by one. Then Betsy, Peggy, Pam & Pete, Jerry, Chris, Pastor Joel, Mary, Ruth, Helen, Mike, Ron & Sandy and so many others. Each one went to work. Each one helping us out. Thank you Lord for the body of Christ!

Then I met with Paul from Convoy of Hope. What a tremendous brother in Christ. Such kindred spirits...such support...such a strong servant's heart and sincere humility. He took the ball with all the logistics of hosting such a big outreach for our community. I called Pastor Randy from Northview A/G in town who was working on possible locations to host this outreach. Thanks Pastor Randy for your kind assistance in picking up the ball on this one. Went to visit a possible site with two staff members from Lakeview Church in Indianapolis, who have joined the team for this ministry venture in our city. We stood outside this vacant building and prayed for God to show us His will and reveal His plan. Knew that God was leading us in this journey, so we sought His wisdom and guidance. As the plans unfolded before our very eyes for the logistics to this outreach, all signs kept coming back to disaster central @ CFA's back parking lot. This is where the storm hit. This is where the waters flowed...right through our church. We would take back what the devil tried to steal from us and reach out to our neighbors with God's love and compassion. Paul will completely direct and cover all the logistics, along with capable and journey-tested volunteers. Thanks Lord, once again you've shown us your faithfulness and mile markers of wisdom along this pathway!

Again, many pastors called to lend their support to the efforts of rebuilding, restoration and renewal. Pastor Burton and Pastor Murray from our sister churches here in Columbus provided support and encouragement. Each of them have people with great needs and difficult circumstances as well. Pastor Brian and Pastor Chuck and Pastor Mike and Pastor Butch also checked in. God has brought so many partners to share this load and extend open and willing hands. God is good...all the time!

The workers from the restoration company got a lot accomplished today. Took out carpets from the fellowship hall, sanctuary, and cleared out one office. Moved the pews one at a time to get to the carpets. Set up large dehumidifiers to remove the humidity and moisture from the entire building. Equipment being used on our church was the high dollar kind. It had reached up to 70% in the walls. When I left late tonight, the large tunnels of moving air was really doing the job. Quite the site to behold! Just think of it as the winds of the Spirit hovering over our church complex from end to end. Covered. Protected. Quality insurance from above. Thanks Lord. Your master plan is being fulfilled right before our physical eyes!

Talked directly with the City Inspector for his judgments needed on electrical units. The Duke Energy worker was also kind and easy to work with. The county offices quickly responded with our late hour desperate call for help! Thanks Lord for favor with the right people to assist us with your wisdom and protection! I even prayed a prayer for these two community leaders as they jumped in their truck to attend to the next emergency call.

Then it was off to prepare for our first Flood Gathering for our CFA family. They were wondering what we were going to do. They were concerned. They need encouragement and leadership. God led me to a passage in the Bible to speak from. Felt the power of the Holy Ghost on my life as He used me to speak the words of God into their hearts. Great spirit in this gathering tonight. Lots of hugs. Lots of togetherness. Lots of family sitting next to one another. Lots of smiles even if we've been displaced from our regular service schedule. Adjusting to change. Not real easy to do, but I saw a determination from our people that was real encouraging. I sensed that they really believe that we CAN DO THIS...we can make it...that we will be transformed in the process. Whatever it takes!

My youth pastor led us in three songs of powerful worship. People praised God. They lifted their voices right in the battleground of destruction. They worshiped their Lord and Savior even if "all is stripped away....getting back to the true heart of worship." Wow!!

We all saw the news team from Indy in our parking lot who wanted to cover this story. What is a church doing in the midst of this crisis? What do you want to accomplish? Why are you meeting outside tonight? I replied with affirming replies of God's purposes and God's faithfulness to the reporter. Not real comfortable in setting like this. Again, we've never been in this place of desperate dependence before either.

Message was real simple tonight: We don't know what to do, but Lord, our eyes are upon YOU!

Lead us. Guide us and we will follow you...wherever you intend to take us!

Two things for you to do for me, OK:

1) Please pray for the Convoy of Hope Community Outreach being conducted on our back parking lot tomorrow (Thursday) from 9 to 5 pm, or until all supplies are given away. Pray for opportunities of prayer and ministry to be interspersed in each divine window of opportunity to touch someones wounded life with the love of Jesus. Right now a case of water or bucket of cleaning supplies are in precious demand right now. Thanks Convoy of Hope for working with us to reach our city for Christ! You are angels from above.

2) Would you post a "comment" on this blog to share your words of support and encouragement to our church and community? You don't have to leave your full name if you don't want to. You can be "anonymous" and just leave your comments. But you could also respond with your first name and where you are dialing in from, so to speak: Illinois, Wisconsin, Colorado, Texas, India, etc. All you need to do is click on the comment link below this post, then leave us your personal note of support. It would be such a blessing to me and our church family!'

Thanks so much for following us in this "journey of faith." It is getting more and more exciting each day to see what God is going to do next.

I'm loving God more and more.

Keep looking up!!

Continued Cleanup!

(Picture of Dollar General Store)

Little tough getting going after a strenuous and exhausting day yesterday. But once I started moving forward I discovered many signposts of God's activity along today's journey.

Thanks Lord for the many people you placed in my path today. Calls and visits from many local and out of town pastors was encouraging. Calls from many other Christians who also offered prayers for us was uplifting. People letting us know that our church and community has been placed on their church's prayer list is powerful. You begin to understand the vast and wonderful family of God that you belong to and are part of. Trying to juggle all the responsibilities of a church in crisis is overwhelming, but then another wind of encouragement comes in to lift my sails. Lord, you know my strengths and limitations. You know me from the inside out. You cover me with your wings. You shield me from the whisperings of the attacker. You protect me with your love.

We found a place to worship in on Sunday's. We will be moving to a one service format per week for the near future. Thanks Lord for going before us to secure a convenient and accessible location. Another gracious provision that you've bestowed upon us Lord!

We've also brought in the services of a cleaning and restoration company to speed up the process of our total church renovation project. It appears more complex than I had first thought. More than likely all carpet will be removed and disposed of. Drywall will also be removed and taken out from about 4 feet from off the ground. The entire basement will require extreme measures to allow us back in for ministry and movement. In a word...patience! Getting things back to normal will require patience from every member of our congregation. Getting our church back to normal operations will not be in the short term. It will take time...lots of time. Will we succeed? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT...we will climb this mountain with God leading us forward...the Holy Spirit empowering us...our brothers and sisters walking beside us...faith rising within our hearts...and the Word of God grounding and growing in us daily!

I wonder where God will take us. I wonder what God has in mind for our church. I wonder where we will be in months to come. I just wonder what the road map in heaven reveals for Columbus First Assembly by the time December rolls around. All I can say is that we will have grown some strong spiritual muscles in the process and reached out to many hurting souls along the way. Lord, we're ready to follow you. Lord, you have the master plan...we will pursue it! Lord, may we be your hands extended to the people around us.

Will prepare for our first church gathering tomorrow night in our parking lot. We will assemble as one body. We will call upon the Lord together. We will love one another. We will grow closer. We will be strengthened from His Word. People from our church cry when they visit CFA disaster central. Tears well up in their eyes when they see the damage. They hug a neck. They look for some way to help out. They understand the mountain that we are climbing together. BUT GOD...

I am deeply thankful that I have a wonderful home to come home to each night. It was not affected by the flood. I am blessed beyond measure. I have a shower where I can clean up. I have a washing machine with hot water to clean our clothes. I have a refrigerator where I can find something to eat. I have my family to love. I have this home computer to come to to write posts for this blog. My wife and I and our children are extremely blessed...beyond all limits! Thank you Lord! So many others have lost everything...please provide for each one of them. Lift them up and support them.

I leave you with the words of Jesus: He said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you!" Friend, you can take that to the bank. He is on your side. He will lift you up. He will lead you out. All you need to do is call upon Him and place your complete trust in Him. He is loving and kind. He is compassionate and merciful. He is strong and mighty...boy do I need Him!

I anticipate the mile markers of God's faithfulness and provision in tomorrow's journey. It's gonna be a great day! Can't wait to see what He's going to do. Each day is unique. Each moment is a memorable one.

Got to hit the sack.

Love to all,

Pastor Andreasen

Long day...

Started the day early...dropped by Circle K for a coffee...discovered that the city is under a boil order. No one is to drink city water. Drove to the church and had to go around street blockades. Pulled in the parking lot under a bright sunshine. Began taking some pictures of our property, church, sanctuary, etc. (Will not have the pics available here as I'm using an alternate computer to post this.)

Began meeting our neighbors around the church...witnessing their devastation...feeling their pain...praying with some. One home had its foundation in the back crumble and even shift some. Another barely made it out before they could have been swept up in the current. Another had a car submerged. Another had their home condemned. Many began carrying out their belongings and building mounds of debris out in front of their homes for city workers to pick up. Some I talked to spent a night in the local shelter. Others returned back to their homes to witness utter loss. Others were dry and clear. Such emotional swings. Cry with those who weep and rejoice with those who can rejoice. Let the love of God flow through you!

Making phone calls was next. Had to use my cell because the church phones were out. Talked to many more people. Got the news out about our complete flood loss. Everything was under water - almost everything, but not the platform and area behind it; and of course, the balcony.

The basement was being pumped out while I worked. Took all day to get it within a couple of inches from the sludge and slime and mounds of mud. People arrived to help out. Sight seekers were also in the mix. Can't believe my church is the focus of this national news story. The family of God is strong and wide-spread. As the channel of news spreads, more help is coming. WE WILL MAKE IT! The Lord is on our side.

Visited one of our senior citizen couples. They lost their home. In fact, the entire subdivision was under water. Piles and piles of water-logged furniture, clothes, boxes, appliances and things stood in tall heaps. Big trucks picked them up and placed them in city trucks. I wept and prayed with them. Their family and church members were on the scene helping out...doing what they could...doing what they must. They will be OK...they are staying with some friends in the church. This is the Book of Acts in motion...right before my eyes. Wonderful!

Called on so many of our church people in the afternoon...from my house...because it had a land line phone. Most were in good shape...some had water in basements...and some had total loss. God is with us!

Went back to the church. Hugged some more necks, loved and encouraged our members. Watched the principle of relationships at work. Everyone doing something...no matter how small it looked or appeared. Moving one more step to the goal. Being all that God wants us to be in the vision of transforming lives...one person at a time.

Conducted a brief leaders meeting. Brought them up to speed with the progress of work that day. Set some plans and looked ahead. Will be having worship services elsewhere's until we can reconvene again in our church. Then we prayed...called out to God...acknowledged our ignorance in this overwhelming situation...asked for wisdom...and felt His power in that room. Felt divine strength from above. Knew we would get through this because Almighty God was on our side. The wind of the Spirit was in that room...awesome!

Was greatly encouraged by the calls from our national leaders in Springfield. They were advised of our situation. They were praying. They would send help in any way that we needed it. Happy for Convoy of Hope to be coming here. Letting us extend the hands of Jesus to our community. It will be a holy treat.

Took the first shift of watch duty tonight with my oldest son around our church property...looters have begun looting. A policeman encouraged us to initiate this volunteer endeavor from our church family. Later, a policeman from Cincinnati showed up on the grounds, plus a local officer came in to check on us. Encouraged also by their presence.

Must get some shut eye. We start all over again in the morning.

If you could, send up a prayer for our church. May we let the light of God's love shine brightly at 10th and Iowa, as well as around this city.

Columbus, Indiana Flooded! Surpasses Historic 1913 All Time Record by One Foot!!

Listen to what God's Word says,
"But now, this is what the Lord says-- he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior." (Isaiah 43:1-3)

Yes, the building where we gathered for worship has been submerged under the Haw Creek waters. Everything was under water. The entire basement was filled up. Clean up now begins...

But the CHURCH is people, not just a building. God's people are resilient. God's people will overcome. God's people will come together. The ministry of transforming lives will continue.

Just this past Friday night we gathered in the sanctuary for our monthly BAL (Beyond All Limits) Prayer Meeting. We prayed. We read scriptures. We prayed for God to bless us in the summer months, and for God to use us. We prayed for God to be with us. Now, this isn't what I was thinking, praying or anticipating. But God's ways are always much higher than our ways...we must trust Him with this.

NOW, the time to be the CHURCH in Columbus is upon us. We must serve our neighbors. We must think of others, better than ourselves. We must volunteer our efforts. We must unite under the banner of Christ with full force and complete surrender. We belong to Him. We will follow Him. We will assemble as one. We will touch this community in ways never before presented to us.

I love you. Be encouraged. God is with us!

BAL Summer

Beyond All Limits (BAL) is the theme for this year at our church. God is a great and mighty God who works on behalf of those who seek Him.

"God can do anything, you know— far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us." - Gal. 3:20 (Message)

We believe that God will give us a Beyond All Limits Summer far above anything we could imagine. This summer...
  • Families will enjoy BAL vacations...
  • Ministries will experience BAL opportunities...
  • Services will embrace BAL possibilities...
  • Outreaches will encounter BAL transformations...
  • Giving will empower BAL measures...
  • Growth will enable BAL vision points...

The church is alive and well. God is moving in the lives of those committed to His purposes and yielded to His will. Be faithful to follow and serve Him. I know this...get ready for some exciting things to happen!

Looking up!

St. Elmo

That's the name of the town in Illinois where we first pastored. We were involved in youth ministry for 8 1/2 years before we accepted our first pastorate in St. Elmo. It was a great 4 1/2 years @ St. Elmo First Assembly of God. We learned a lot. God used us in those years to reach many people for Christ. Our three boys were young when we lived there: Jordon was almost three, Trenton was about two months old and Devon was born later in '94.

Memories. Yesterday a family from that church visited us in our Sunday Morning service. It was wonderful to visit with the Borntreger's in our home after church. Mark and Brenda are precious people. Their son Kevin and grandson Taran joined them. In fact, it was Kevin (who is now 23) who initiated the visit. He wanted to see us before he leaves for deployment with the National Guard in a couple of weeks.

Kevin was a scrappy little boy of about 6 when we accepted the church in 1991. Now to see him some 17 years later was a thrill. He is a handsome young man. He's taller than me...bigger than me...and stronger than me (not that I was ever that strong anyway ; - ) And to think that he will be serving our country in his first tour of duty. I am very proud of him!

Kevin, I pray that you will continue to live for Jesus. Stay close to Him. Talk to Him. Never forget that He is just a prayer away! He will never leave you or abandon you while you serve your country overseas. His hand will be over your life and His Spirit in your heart. May God bless you abundantly!

Full Memorial Day Weekend!

It's over! Memorial Day weekend was a busy one for us as it probably was for you. But it was a very good one too.

Last Friday the kids went to their last day of school for this school year. They are literally ecstatic. No more school for about 3 months. I remember the days...it was a complete sigh of relief. Great days of summer and sun are ahead for them.

Saturday two of my boys were involved in our missions walk-a-thon. Two of my boys worked at Pizza Hut. Tammy was at home cleaning up the house for the F2G ministry on Sunday night. Plus I was finishing up for Sunday services!

Sunday was a fantastic day of ministry. Lots of friends and guests joined us for service. It was great to see Mike & Candy Taylor and their family in service while Mike was down here on business. I love this family - great people! The message I preached touched many hearts that morning. God was so good to us. Then Sunday night we hosted one of our Focus 2 Group Fellowships here at our house after a brief service and devotional at the church. We grilled hotdogs and hamburgers, shared some terrific fellowship out on the deck and in our home, and also played some doubles in ping pong too (gotta have a little pong!!).

Yesterday on Memorial Day we just plain took it easy. Tammy and I went to the store for some groceries. We grilled out again. Painted some end tables. Then Devon, Ashlyn and I ventured out on a bike ride about 4:45 pm. We got on the bike and people trails and enjoyed ourselves as it was a cool evening. We ended up journeying all the way downtown and then out to Mill Race Park. Threw some skipper rocks in the river and searched for treasures. Then to Noblitt Park, Donner Park, and over to Lincoln Park and then we rested under the viaduct at 25th and National Roads while it was raining. We finally got home around 7:45 pm, which was about 11 or 12 miles and 3 hours later. Amazed at how far we went...the kids really did super, but it sure did tire us out. Man I'm pooped!!

Trust you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did!

God bless you!

Surprised on 25th Anniversary in Ministry Celebration!

Surprised. Shocked. Stumped. Yes, my church was able to keep the secret hid (as well as everyone in my family!) of the celebration they gave to me for my 25 years in ministry yesterday morning! Wow!! I was deeply humbled by the presentations that each board member made to me...

  • Plaque of the Mayors' Proclamation for a Pastor Donald Andreasen Day here in Columbus.

  • Posting of the Proclamation placed in The Republic newspaper.

  • Cards from the congregation.

  • Letters from family members.

  • Picture power point presentation of my 25 years in ministry, along with some really great family pictures and awesome memories!

  • Special gifts and mementos.

  • Kind and encouraging words spoken.

  • Money for a CRUISE that we will be taking sometime this year. Can you believe this? My church rallied together to fulfill a dream of my wife and I for taking a relaxing cruise together (we were dreaming to do this on our 25th wedding anniversary - which is 3 1/2 years away - but I had no idea that this would be accomplished for my 25th anniversary of serving in full time ministry). Not sure where Tammy wants to go, but I know one thing, she can't wait to depart on the big boat with her husband and some good sun tan lotion!! It really was a mind boggling presentation. To grasp that so many precious people gave from their own finances to make this dream become a reality. This was over the top. Totally awed by the favor and goodness from God's people!!

  • Plus a file of potential cruises with price listings and possible destinations.

I sat there in the front pew while the tears flowed down my cheeks and my wife stood by my side. I somehow managed to get up to the front and address the congregation. I'm not sure that I made much sense because I was blown away by the honor and love that my church bestowed upon me. Thanks CFA for your kind, generous, amazing and "beyond all limits" recognition of your pastor's 25 years of ministerial service to the body of Christ! I love you all.

Lord, thank you for allowing me to serve you these last 25 years since graduating from Central Bible College. It has been an incredible and fascinating journey. So many spiritual victories. So many changed lives. So many prayers prayed. So many miracles witnessed. So many messages preached. So many lessons taught. So many hearts touched by your love and grace. So many churches that shared together to reach their communities for Christ. So many dollars raised to reach our world for Jesus. So many wonderful families. So many wonderful associates, board members and servant leaders. BUT I could not have reached this milestone in ministry without the love, support and encouragement from my wife Tammy and my four wonderful children. Together we have served. Together we have loved. Together we have reached out to minister God's love and compassion to those that God brought us to. God, you are so good to us!!

If our paths have crossed during these last 25 years in ministry, would you take the time to write a little comment and post that here on my blog. I would love to hear from you.

Blessings!

Powerful Wind!

Mother's Day was powerful! It all started early Sunday morning with the storms blowing through Columbus. It was the same storm that ripped through Oklahoma and Arkansas with severe tornadoes and deadly devastation. We didn't have near the intensity of what other states experienced, but we did get some unbelievable winds. In fact, it was so strong that it lifted the steeple right off of our church and set it down neatly along the green medium in our parking lot.
Looks like another project for us to work on...when will it ever end??

Back to Mother's Day. My wife did a super job of ministering to our church on this special occasion. The Lord gave her a message about "On His Side" back several months ago. It blessed every mother present, as well as the entire congregation. Every heart was touched by her ministry!! You can hear the entire message @ http://www.columbusfirstassembly.org/RESOURCES/SermonPodcast/tabid/6533/Default.aspx

We had a great attendance as well with family members and guests joining in. We presented special gifts to mothers who won the specific categories that were present, such as the "mother with the most generations present"...that winner was 4! Special music was given by Shawn Sylvia, complete with a video powerpoint presentation. Gifts were also given to every woman in attendance. What a great service: powerful worship, strong teaching ministry, great fellowship, anointed times in His presence and special music. Let me invite you to worship with us if you live anywhere within 30 miles from our church. You'll be glad you did! (Tell me you read my blog when you shake my hand!)

Have a blessed week!

Hobbies and interests!

Everybody has special interests or hobbies. I've been thinking about the special things that interest my kids. Ashlyn is a pet lover. She loves her cat very much, but now she has a new interest: a guinea pig named Butter Finger (you can figure out where that name came from!). Devon is my game boy child. You will find him with his game boy playing games constantly (I can remember when astroids and galaga games were hot in my day!). Trenton loves soccer and is very good at it (he just finished up the city rec league on Saturday and notched 9 goals in 6 games...that's awesome!). Jordon is our computer whiz kid (he has his own custom-built desktop computer with an unheard of amount of gigabytes, plus a laptop too!).

God has gifted us with special interests, as well as abilities. We are drawn to some things more than others. I am constantly amazed at the spiritual gifts that our new members discover when they come through my membership class here at church. Each one has strengths in different areas. Some score high in administration, others in areas of craftmanship, others in music, still others yet in prayer, teaching or exhortation. Each person is unique and individual. In other words, God didn't set us up in a cookie-cutter mold...we are custom crafted and designed...for His glory and honor!

Listen to this: "God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God's many kinds of blessings." - 1 Peter 4:10 (TLB)

Are you passing on to others? I hope you are!

Have a wonderful Monday!
